South African passport holders do not require a visa. Passports are simply stamped upon arrival at the border post. All other nationalities require a 30 day tourist visa and passports should be valid for a minimum of 6 months after departure from Mozambique.
While visas can be arranged at the Lebombo border post (South Africa), it is highly recommended that you obtain a visa from your nearest embassy prior to travel, in order to avoid lengthy delays.
The local currency is the Mozambique Metical (or Meticais). While South African Rands and US Dollars are accepted in some establishments, it is usually at poor exchange rates and therefore not recommended. Travellers Cheques are not accepted.
There are 4 banks with ATM’s in the area – one in Tofo and three in Inhambane. The ATM’s accept most international credit cards including Visa and Mastercard. Cash is received in Meticais and it is recommended that you check exchange rates before your transaction.
